«I wonder how our boy is doing? Is he awake yet?» Margaret was preparing the first trulyadult breakfast for her son. The traditional porridge had given way to fried bacon, eggs, and amug of aromatic coffee. She nervously adjusted the napkin on the table. «Dear, do you think he’ll like the coffee?» sheasked Arthur, who was, as usual, absorbed in the morning newspaper. «Maybe he will readthe newspapers in the morning, just like you?» she continued. «You must give him one ofthem today!» «We’ll see,» Arthur replied, not looking up from the morning news. Margaret once again adjusted the cutlery. She took a paper napkin, folded it into a triangle,and tucked it under the edge of the plate. After a moment of thought, she removed thenapkin. «Is this better?» she asked Arthur, but he was completely engrossed in his newspaper. «Mom, will Danny play with me?» Hope, having long caught her mother’s anxious mood, wastrying her best to help, although she was mostly just getting underfoot. «Of
